How can I stop my teen from distracted driving?

Distracted driving is a serious issue in New Hampshire, especially for teens. As a result, many parents worry that their children will be involved in a crash, which can sometimes have devastating consequences. Geico offers the following tips, which help parents discuss distracted driving with their teens.

Don’t eat and drive

If your child has a full social calendar, he or she may eat while driving quite a bit in an attempt to save time. Much like other types of distracted driving, eating while behind the wheel delays your response time and prevents you from focusing on the road. Encourage your teen to wake up earlier to eat breakfast before school and to make time for other meals throughout the day.

Cell phones should only be used for emergencies

Texting and driving are also extremely hazardous. Not only does it take your mind off the task at hand, it also requires taking your hands off the wheel and your eyes off the road. Teens should set their phone on silent and store it somewhere safe in the car. If there is an emergency, a cell phone should only be used while the vehicle is stopped, and the car is safely off the road.

Limit the number of passengers

Passengers in your vehicle can also prove distracting. This is particularly true for teens, whose friends may pull their attention away while driving. Limit the number of friends your teen driver takes along for the ride. It can take some time to build up driving skill and you want your child to build these skills in a safe, distraction-free environment.
