Giving big rigs extra room can help you avoid a crash

New Hampshire roadways can be a maze of potholes, slick spots and no-shoulder curves. While these conditions can be challenging for any driver, they can have catastrophic results for big rig drivers who disregard safety measures.  At The Law Offices of Stephen C. Brown & Associates, our team has experience representing clients injured in a big truck crash due to reckless driving.

FMCAS reports that the Fatality Analysis Reporting System reveals that adverse road conditions cause approximately one-quarter of the nation’s speed-related tractor-trailer fatalities. Reduce the chance of being in an accident with a big rig by increasing the distance between you and the truck and reducing your speed.

The size and weight of the big rig play a role in whether the court views a driver’s behavior reckless driving.  An eighteen-wheeler’s center of gravity is higher than passenger cars and trucks. Broad, sweeping curves can affect the driver’s ability to control the vehicle reliably. If they do not slow down before entering the curve, the trailer is susceptible to rolling over. If the driver tries to stop mid-curve, the brakes may lock, and the truck could skid. Such loss of control means that they likely cannot avoid crashing into you.

When big trucks have loaded trailers, it may take up to 40 percent more space to stop than a regular car or light truck. If the driver slams on the brakes when he has a full load, the vehicle is ten times more likely to skid and rollover than if the trailer was empty.

Giving tractor-trailers extra room on the road can help you stay safe if the road and weather conditions prevent the vehicle from stopping as usual due to reckless driving. Visit our webpage for more information on this topic.
