Car accidents: Hit-and-run driver located after fatal crash

Leaving an accident scene in New Hampshire without rendering aid to those who may need help is a violation of the law. However, reports about drivers who are responsible for car accidents and then fleeing the crash scenes are not uncommon. This complicates the claims process should victims want to pursue recovery of damages.

However, in many cases, the persons responsible are located and identified within a reasonable period. This was the case after a recent accident on Route 153. According to a report by the New Hampshire State Police, a 63-year-old pickup truck driver was southbound when -- for reasons yet to be determined -- he veered across the center line and entered the northbound traffic lanes.

A crash with an oncoming car followed, and the pickup truck driver fled on foot. The 46-year-old driver of the car suffered fatal injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. After locating the visibly injured pickup truck driver, walking along the road, police arrested him, and he will now be facing felony charges related to his alleged misconduct after causing an accident involving death or injury.

Injured victims or the families of those who lost their lives in such accidents may proceed with pursuing financial relief through the New Hampshire justice system once the drivers who are responsible for hit-and-run car accidents have been identified. In this case, the family may file a wrongful death claim in a civil court, and once negligence is established the court can hold that party financially liable. A monetary judgment may then be awarded for adjudicated, documented claims for financial and emotional damages sustained.
