Drug charges stem from 'hands free' traffic stop

The "hands free" laws that just went into action in New Hampshire say that drivers are not allowed to use mobile devices while behind the wheel. This is meant to crack down on texting and driving and other such distractions. For one 29-year-old woman from Manchester, though, it could lead to far more serious charges.

Police saw her driving at the intersection where Valley and Maple come together, and she was allegedly using a mobile device. The officers pulled her over. What they found was that she had outstanding warrants for her over in Derry. They brought a K9 team in to check the car, and that's when they reportedly found clonazepam pills.

The woman is now facing drug charges, all after a simple traffic stop. That stop happened at about 8:50 in the evening.

Clonazepam is only available to those who have a prescription for it. The woman apparently had it in a different container than it originally came in.

That wasn't the end of it, though. There was another woman in the car as well, also from Manchester. She is 32 years old. When police searched her, they say they found syringes -- which had already been used -- and 0.8 grams of heroin.

Both of them were arrested. The charges against them are for possession of controlled drugs. The passenger has not yet been arraigned, but the driver had bail established at $5,000. The trial is expected to begin on Aug. 5.

No matter how the charges came about, all people who are facing them deserve to have a fair trial, and they need to know their legal defense options.
