Teacher gets plea deal in sexual assault case involving student

High school teachers are sometimes so close in age with their students that the student-teacher relationship often crosses a line into friendship. When that friendship starts to grow stronger, there are sometimes intense feelings that occur. One 29-year-old teacher recently pleaded guilty to charges stemming from an inappropriate relationship he had with one of the students at Stevens High School. New Hampshire residents might like to know how the case was resolved.

The male teacher pleaded guilty to one count of felonioussexual assault and one count of pattern of aggravated felonious sexual assault. Instead of having an arraignment, the man ended up having a plea and sentencing hearing.

He will serve a total of 42 months to seven years in state prison in exchange for his guilty plea. That total is for the count of felonious sexual assault. On the other charge, the man got a suspended sentence of five to 15 years if he commits a new crime or violates the conditions of his plea. There is a 15-year limit on the suspended sentence. He will also have to register as a sex offender for life, complete a sex offender program, stay away from school properties, relinquish his teaching certificate and avoid contact with the girl and her family.

As part of his plea hearing, the girl and her mother both gave impact statements. They are thankful for the swift resolution of the case. The former teacher now has to begin serving his time behind bars, which could have been much longer if he hadn't have gotten the suspended sentence. Anyone who is going before the court on serious charges like this man might need to explore the possibility of a plea agreement just as this man did.
