New Hampshire sees spike in heroin-related deaths

Recently on this blog, we wrote about how some experts across the United States believe that an increase in people abusing prescription painkillers like OxyContin has led to a surge in heroin use over the past decade or so. Now, a May 19 article published by New Hampshire news outlet the Union Leader reveals that heroin-related deaths in the Granite State have jumped from eight per year in the mid-2000s to 49 in 2011, indicating that this particular drug abuse trend is proving to be particularly dangerous.

Sgt. Brian LeVeille of the Manchester Police Department told the source that people who are addicted to heroin don't always fit the stereotypes, implying that they are often successful individuals who appear from the outside to be leading perfectly normal lives - at least in the beginning stages.

"Before you know it, you're doing it seven days a week because you have to. It's a nasty, nasty drug," LeVeille said, according to the source. "We deal with these people all the time. It's very sad to see, to be honest with you. And they're the most difficult people to deal with because they just have no control over any aspect of their lives. None whatsoever."

If you have been accused of a crime like drug possession, be sure to enlist the help of an experienced New Hampshire criminal lawyer. These professionals can prove to be invaluable allies who will work tirelessly on your behalf to ensure that you receive a fair trial and can get your life back on track as soon as possible.
