Common causes of motorcycle accidents

Many riders feel the ultimate sign of freedom and entertainment is the ability to feel the wind around them as they are riding down the road. Drivers are passionate about their motorcycles but recognize that there are inherent risks that come with owning a bike. In 2015, close to 90,000 motorcyclists were injured on the road, and almost 5,000 died from their injuries.

To keep yourself safe and avoid injury, there are several important safety rules that you should never ignore. If you know the common causes of motorcycle accidents, you can do your best to avoid them and stay safe no matter where you are.

Gravel on a blind corner

It is not just other drivers or vehicles that you need to watch out for; it is also debris and junk on the road. If you round a corner to find debris or gravel in front of you, staying in control is difficult. Keep your pace slow enough that you can react any time you do not have a full view of the road ahead of you.

A strike from behind

If you must stop quickly, and the driver behind you is not paying attention, the vehicle is likely to hit you. While these are often just small fender benders between two vehicles, this type of accident can be deadly for a motorcyclist. Rather than stopping in the center of the lane, try to move to the side and tap your brakes so other vehicles see you. Pay close attention to those behind you and be prepared to move if someone does not stop.

A cut-off with a left turn

If a car judges your speed wrong or fails to see you, the driver may turn in front of you at an intersection. Drivers have a hard time watching for motorcycles, and you should always be aware that a driver next to or in front of you may not see you.

If you have been injured in a motorcycle accident because of another driver’s negligence, you may deserve compensation. You should speak to an attorney immediately.
