Car accidents: Driver suffers cardiac arrest after head-on crash

A 46-year-old man from another state recently lost his life on Route 3 in Holderness. New Hampshire police reported that this was one of many similar car accidents in which one driver crosses into the lanes of traffic going in the opposite direction. The collision apparently occurred shortly after midday on a recent Thursday in early March.

A preliminary accident report indicated that the man was traveling south when he -- for reasons not yet determined -- crossed into the northbound lanes. The car of a 46-year-old Alton woman was struck almost head-on. State police said both drivers were trapped in their vehicles and had to be extricated. The man who crossed the center line reportedly suffered severe injuries to his body and his head. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.

The woman who drove the other car also suffered serious injuries, and she reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest in the ambulance while she was being rushed to a hospital. Fortunately, emergency personnel managed to stabilize her after she was resuscitated. The accident investigation is ongoing, but officers believe alcohol played a role in this crash.

Victims of car accidents in New Hampshire that were caused by the negligence of other parties may pursue financial relief for medical expenses and other damages. A personal injury claim can be filed in a civil court against an alleged negligent driver, and once negligence is established to the court's satisfaction, a monetary judgment may be entered to cover documented claims. If the negligent party did not survive the crash, his or her estate could be named as the defendant.
