When we hear about people being arrested in relation to car accidents, we often hear about drunk drivers and repeat offenders. There are obvious a lot of generalizations and stereotypes that come with individuals who are facing criminal charges. But in many cases, the person facing the charges is someone who has never been in trouble with the law.
A recent case in Plaistow involves the most unlikely suspect – a nun. The 81-year-old woman apparently turned herself in after hitting a car while she was in a shopping center parking lot. According to the news report, the elderly woman was backing out of a parking spot when she hit another car that was parked. The owner of the car spoke with the nun after the accident and the alleged victim went to her car to get something to write down information with. When she did that, the nun got into her car and left the scene.
A warrant was issued after the accident and the nun eventually turned herself in. She faces one misdemeanor charge of conduct after an accident. This charge brings the potential for up to one year in jail.
It can understandably be frustrating when your vehicle is hit and the person leaves the scene of the accident. But in the same breath, it is hard to know the mental and physical capabilities of the 81-year-old woman. Further investigation into the circumstances of the case can hopefully bring more understanding as to why this incident happened in the first place.
