A man from a nearby state learned recently that plans of any type -- and especially criminal plans -- can be derailed by an accident. The man was driving in New Hampshire when he fell asleep, say police. The 21-year-old man crashed his car into a telephone pole as a result.
Police responded to the scene after receiving calls about a car that had crashed. According to reports, the 21-year-old was driving a Subaru Legacy. The black sedan had sustained heavy damage to the front when it hit the pole. There were fluids leaking from the car. Police say the crash snapped the telephone pole, which had to be replaced.
The man allegedly tried to get rid of a duffle bag before the police arrived on the scene. Police say the bag carried marijuana. They arrested the man, who was charged with possession of the drug and possession with intent to distribute. The man was also charged with transportation of the drugs.
According to reports, the man was released after posting a $5,000 bail. An arraignment hearing is scheduled for the man for June.
A criminal defense doesn't start at an arraignment hearing. As soon as a person faces the possibility of criminal charges, a defense strategy becomes important. From an initial arrest through to court decisions, a strong defense protects defendant's rights, weighs the facts and situation of the case and helps make decisions to increase the chance for a more positive outcome.
In this case, the man was allegedly found in possession of the drugs. Even so, a defense is not impossible with the right planning and understanding.
