Arrest after high-speed chase ends in Rochester

Rochester police said a 36-year-old man driving over 100 mph led them on a chase around the city. At the end of the pursuit, the Vermont man was arrested on a variety of charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer.

Law enforcement officials claim that the man tried to drive over a police officer during the high-speed chase.

The charges filed against him were from an earlier arrest in Vermont. He's accused there not only of the assault, but also attempting to evade capture, resisting arrest, heroin possession and negligent operation of a vehicle.

New Hampshire Probation and Parole apparently contacted Rochester police and Strafford County Sheriff's deputies to look for the man at a Bridge Street home. As they approached the residence, the suspect drove off and allegedly "almost ran over one of the officers in the driveway."

The man eventually went north on Route 125. Police said they pulled pursuing vehicles from the high-speed chase as a precaution.

The suspect reportedly slammed the vehicle into a curb on Milton Road, making the vehicle impossible to drive further. He then took off on foot, according to a police spokesperson.

Officers from Farmington, Middleton, Barrington, Milton and New Durham assisted in the search for the suspect who was taken into custody in a Milton Road garage shortly after noon.

At the time, the police spokesperson indicated the man might well face a charge in Rochester of attempted first-degree assault on a police officer.

No one was injured in the chase or arrest.

It's clear the man faces serious criminal charges in Vermont and likely here as well. Anyone in a similar situation should discuss their legal options with a criminal defense attorney.
